Hi! I’m Megan,
the artist behind MS Fine Art Studio. I’ve been working professionally with colored pencils since 2009, developing a deep understanding of the medium and a passion for creating detailed, realistic artwork.
Growing up in my mom’s print shop, surrounded by calligraphers, bookbinders, and illustrators, I was drawn to the precision and beauty of realism — capturing light, depth, and fine detail on paper felt truly magical. That passion has stayed with me, driving me to push the limits of what’s possible with colored pencils.
With over 15 years of experience, I’ve honed my craft through dedication and a love of the process. My work has received national and international awards, and has been featured in American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, Southwest Art, and International Artist Magazine, among others. I also teach, write tutorials, and share insights through artist talks to support others on their creative path.

My artistic philosophy centers on capturing the unique beauty of each subject through careful observation of detail, color, and light. I'm drawn to realism because it honors individuality — revealing how even the most precisely rendered artwork is shaped by the artist’s personal vision. No two pieces are ever truly alike, because each artist sees the world through their own lens. Art celebrates that perspective and invites us to see the intricate beauty that surrounds us every day.

Laying the Foundation
We’ll start with an overview of the course. Then, we’ll dive into materials — exploring different pencil brands, paper types, and essential tools like sharpeners, erasers, and blending supplies. By the end, you’ll know exactly which materials work best for your artistic style.
Module 3 & 4
Blending, Color, and Light
Next, we’ll focus on pencil pressure and blending techniques to create smooth gradients. You’ll practice layering, burnishing, and using solvents for seamless transitions. Then, we’ll explore color theory, values, and lighting, learning how to build complex hues, create depth, and master grisaille underpainting.
Module 5, 6 & 7Â Â
Creating Finished Drawings
In the final modules, you’ll put your skills into action by completing 3 full drawings from start to finish. You’ll learn sketching, transferring, blending, and refining details, and ensuring that your piece is polished and professional. By the end, you’ll have three finished pieces of art — and the confidence to create more!

You’ll start by getting oriented with the materials, process, and mindset for the course. Then we’ll dive into photographing your subject, understanding lighting, and preparing a strong reference image. These lessons help you begin with clarity, intention, and a clear visual plan for your drawing.
Module 3 & 4
Surface Prep & Mixed Media Techniques
Here you’ll prepare your drawing surface and explore mixed media approaches using PanPastel. You’ll learn how paper choice, masking, blending, and edge control affect your work, and how to create a strong, dimensional foundation for your botanical drawing.
Module 5 & 6
Building Color, Value & Control
Module 7 & 8
Constructing the Roses & Leaves
You’ll begin building the botanical forms themselves, starting with leaves and moving into the roses. These modules guide you through layering, color refinement, and form development, helping you bring realism and depth to each element.
Module 9, 10 & 11
Final Refinement, Completion & Reflection
